A half-knot is the first half of a square knot; however it can be tied alone. If you tie a chain of half-knots, you’ll get a spiral or twist. The example shown here begins with four cords mounted on a holding cord.

How to Tie A Half-Knot

Half-Knot

Step 1:
To tie a half-knot, bring the left cord over the two middle (core or filler) cords, like an L shape.

Step 2:
Bring the right cord over the tail of the left cord, then under the two middle (core) cords and up through the left loop as shown.

Step 3:
Pull the knot tightly against the middle (core) cords to secure.

This basic knot is used to attach or mount a cord to another cord, ring or another object.

How to tie a Lark’s Head Knot

Fold cord in half to create a loop.

Bring loop under object or cord you are attaching the knot to.

Bring ends of the cord over the object and then through the loop.

Pull cord ends snugly over the holding cord to tighten this knot.
